Castaway vibes reign at this escape-it-all retreat, scattered across a tiny jungly island in the Indian Ocean.
Imagine skimming across the water in a speedboat to a remote island ringed by a turquoise lagoon that’s part of a national marine park. Rustic bungalows cling to forested hillsides, swimming pools glisten invitingly through the jungle. You’re at Cerf Island, a tiny emerald speck cast adrift in the Indian Ocean, two miles east of Mahé. The drum beats to a slower pace here.
Why we love Cerf Island Resort
-
There are just 24 rustic-chic villas tucked into the lush greenery, so the resort has a real away-from-it-all atmosphere
-
The two infinity pools border the beach, with the dreamiest views from the water and the sun loungers
-
Sleepy Cerf Island, a mile long and less than a mile wide, is crisscrossed by quiet pathways made for exploring
-
Snorkelling among butterfly fish, octopus and starfish in the crystalline lagoon is a magical experience
Rooms
The 24 stone-and-timber villas have a harmonious, airy design with high ceilings, natural materials and pale colours to the fore – the epitome of barefoot luxury – and Creole names referencing local trees, flowers and marine creatures. There are just three types: cosy Hillside Villas, Hideaway Villas and two-bedroom Tortoise Suites. Honeymooners will appreciate the Hideaway Villas’ rustic half-outdoor bathroom where you can shower under the stars.
Facilities
Cerf Island Resort knows how to do beachside dining, whether at the two alternating open-sided restaurants, the breezy pool bar or as a private-dining option. They’ll even arrange a picnic lunch if you want to head out to discover one of the island’s other tiny crescents of sand.
Zepis
Enjoy Creole and international dishes served with uninterrupted ocean views and a soundtrack of gently lapping waves.
1756
The slightly smaller fine-dining restaurant has a similar menu and spectacular sea views.
Pool Bar
This serves up cocktails and light lunches for lounger-side refreshments, or you can ask a waiter to bring your drinks down to the beach for you.
You can arrange to have a table for two set up right on the sand – perfect for a romantic firelit dinner.

Le Spa Latanier is halfway up the hill and surrounded by the stubby palms that give it its name. There are two indoor/outdoor treatment rooms where the massages and facials are based around locally produced all-natural essential oils. There’s no gym in this desert-island escape, so keeping fit on land is all about jogging along quiet pathways (there are no roads).
The hotel has snorkelling equipment - there's is a snorkelling trail that is well worth following - and kayaks.
It supports the Cerf Island Conservation Programme, whose activities include a coral nursery and regular beach cleans. The villas are built largely of natural materials such as stone and timber – even the roof tiles are wooden. There’s a rainwater capture system to irrigate the gardens and the new organic vegetable plot. Almost everything from furniture to fruit is sourced locally to promote island businesses and cut unnecessary transport
Children over 7 years are welcome at Cerf Island Resort.
Minimum stay: 3 nights 24 Dec-06 Jan.
The resort is set on a hillside and not suitable for those with walking difficulties.
Free Wi-Fi is only available in the reception/lounge area; payable WiFi is available in the rooms.
